The cycle tour
Pondicherry cycle tour: what to expect, step by step
A two-hour guided cycle ride through the old streets of Pondicherry: the route, what is included, what to bring and who can join. Everything to know before you book.

Many travellers pass through Pondicherry and see only a tiny bit of it. The old town is made of small streets, quiet corners and quarters that feel like different cities, and a car or a rushed walk misses most of it. A guided cycle ride is the simplest way to cover the whole centre in the time of a long breakfast.
This is what happens on the Wake-up Pondy cycle tour, from the first hello to the last stop, so you know exactly what to expect.

Why go by cycle, and why in the morning
Sita was the first to offer guided cycle tours in Pondicherry, back in 2014, in collaboration with My Vintage Bicyclette. The idea is simple: the town is small, flat and full of shady lanes, so a slow ride shows you far more than you would see from a vehicle.
The tour runs every day from 7 to 9 am. The morning slot is the one most guests choose because there is less traffic, the air is fresher and the market is at its liveliest. When the morning tour is well booked, a second tour opens at 3:30 pm.
Meeting at Sita and choosing your cycle
The tour starts and ends at Sita Cultural Center, in a blue villa at 22 Candappa Moudaliar Street. You meet your guide, and you choose your cycle from plenty of options and colours. There are cycles for all sizes and genders, and each one comes with a helmet.

Your guide is a professor in tourism, so the ride comes with the history and the stories of Pondicherry along the way. Groups are small and friendly, and the tour can be adapted to the needs of your group and to the weather. The guide speaks English or French.
The route, stop by stop
The ride covers the entire city centre in about two hours. These are the stops on the route:
- The Muslim quarter. Quaint alleys and the colourful villas of the Muslim area.
- The Indian town. Vivid streets full of everyday Pondicherry life.
- Goubert market. The main market of Pondicherry, early in the morning.
- The Ashram quarter. Quiet, shady streets around the Sri Aurobindo Ashram.
- Kuruchikuppam fishing village. The fishermen's village by the sea.
- The French quarter. The French heritage part of town and its seaside.
Then you ride back to Sita for a moment of rest to finish the tour.
Along the way there are plenty of pit stops to enjoy the views, take pictures and listen carefully to the guide. Pondicherry's motto is "Give time a break!", and the ride follows it. Expect the anecdotes you will not find in a guidebook: the daily life of the people of Pondy, bits of history, and the French words that became Tamil vocabulary and the other way around.

Who can join

Families are welcome. Children from 8 years old ride their own kids' cycle next to their parents, and children under 5 can travel on a baby seat on the back of a cycle.
Prices and booking
The tour costs ₹1,500 for an adult, ₹750 for a child and ₹100 for a baby seat. You pay online when you book, and cancelling 48 hours or more before the start is fully refunded. Bookings close at 6 pm India time the day before.
Please arrive about ten minutes before the start so you have time to choose your cycle. Every guest signs a short release of responsibility on arrival.
